Have your say on use of City Open Space
The City of Greater Geraldton is currently preparing a Public Open Space Strategy, which will inform the City’s Local Planning Strategy and Local Planning Scheme and is seeking community input in the form of a survey. Director of Sustainable Communities, Phil Melling, said the survey is designed to gather information on residents’ recreational needs and preferences and the quality of recreational space in Geraldton and is a direct outcome of the 2029 and Beyond Designing Our City Forum. It was announced on Monday 31 October that the City of Greater Geraldton had been awarded Silver for Category B Whole of Cities Award and the overall category Worl Winner for Community Participation and Enagement at the 2011 LIVCOM Awards, a United Nations backed competition to find the most liveable community on the planet.
The LIVCOM Awards was initiated in 1997 and is the only international competition judged on international best practice for managing the environment while improving resident’s quality of life by creating “liveable communities”.
The City of Greater Geraldton’s submission highlighted our strong sense of community and community participation and empowerment through the 2029 and Beyond project, education and health services, diverse employment opportunities, cultural experiences and a relaxed, family friendly lifestyle all of which is located in a pristine coastal environment.

At the Designing our City 2029, on 13-15 August 2011 the community will work with an expert team from a variety of fields to develop potential plans and design options for the urban areas and surrounding environment of the Greater Geraldton City region. It's not to late to volunteer to become a Community Champion. As a Community Champion you will play a key role in shaping the future of your region. This will include accessing and talking with people in your community about issues that matter to them. You will be empowered with new skills in facilitation, coordination and community engagement techniques, important for the 2029 and Beyond project. The launch of the Country Arts WA "Open your Eyes" conference at the Geraldton Foreshore and the WA Musuem on Saturday 21 May 2001. Come along to the foreshore down the Forrest Street end and join in the fun. The 2029 and Beyond team at the City of Geraldton-Greenough is constantly inspired by and grateful for your ideas and passion. So, a big THANKYOU for all your efforts so far.We’re especially excited about the projects up and running on CivicEvolution. There's everything from tree-planting to youth centres, water fountains and lengthy swims proposed. As always, we want to do whatever we can to help progress these proposals, and have listened to your suggestions for how to do this:
On 16th March from 4pm until 6.30pm we’re hosting Civic Evolution LIVE. The same collaborative atmosphere and same great projects, complemented by everything else you need to progress your proposals: fellow thinkers and doers, a great space, a facilitator, expert advice on progressing proposals, and healthy snacks and drinks.
Andrew Outhwaite will be the facilitator. Andrew’s been involved in 2029 and Beyond Project since the start, and is passionate about enabling community–driven projects.

You and your family are invited to a celebration of what the 2029 and Beyond Project has achieved in 2010 and to let you know where the project is heading in 2011. This event will be held on the Geraldton Foreshore near DOME at 6pm on Wednesday 9 March, 2011.
At the celebration event, we will distribute the Community Directions Forward 2010 document which has been taken directly from community input to date. The reports resulting from the 2010 World Cafes, Survey and Deliberate Forum can be viewed at http://www.2029andbeyond.com.au/project_results.php .

The 2029 and Beyond project has won international acclaim by being selected as one of seven finalists from 123 international submissions for the Reinhard Mohn Prize. The award is part of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, a private foundation which has invested more than $670 million in over 700 projects and is the largest foundation in Germany. In addition to international acclaim the award carries a value of 150,000 Euros (A$212,000).
Two judges from Germany flew to Geraldton in December 2010 to meet city officials and community representatives in order to assist the final decision making process and a film crew was here in January to film around Geraldton and the region and conduct interviews with key players in the project. The Judges report and film will be viewed by 10,000 German citizens who will make the final decision, and the three finalists will be invited to German for the announcement of the winner.
